Groundwater Sampling
Groundwater sampling methods are determined by borehole diameter, depth to water, required flow rate, sampling objectives and the parameters being analysed. Flux Enviro are proud to provide a comprehensive of sampling instruments for no-purge sampling, low-flow sampling, well purging and higher-volume groundwater abstraction.
Sampling Method | No/Low Purge | Low Flow | High Flow | Typical Applications | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
✓ | Grab sampling and no/low-purge groundwater sampling | Simple to use, cost effective, portable and available in multiple sizes | |||
✓ | Deep groundwater sampling and well purging | Simple tubing and foot-valve system; suitable for portable or dedicated installations for deep groundwater. Operates manually or using a mechanical pump (Waterra PP1) | |||
✓ | Shallow groundwater (max 9.25m) and controlled low-flow sampling | Delivers exceptional results for shallow depths sampling. Compatible with water quality meters with flow cells. | |||
✓ | Medium to high flow sampling, well development and purging. | Cost effective and easy to use method suitable for water depths to 30m. | |||
✓ | Low-flow sampling and sensitive analytical programmes | Controlled, low-disturbance sampling best suited for deep groundwater and VOC analysis | |||
✓ | ✓ | Groundwater sampling, purging and deeper boreholes | Robust reusable construction with variable-flow options available |
For low-flow sampling, pumps can be combined with multiparameter instrumentation and flow cells enabling live monitoring of groundwater conditions and to demonstrate well stabilisation prior to sampling. YSI ProDSS, YSI ProQuatro and EXO sondes are available with flow cell arrangements.
Groundwater Quality Monitoring
High quality water quality instrumentation is core business at Flux Enviro. We supply an extensive range of instrumentation to assess water quality in the field and to supplement laboratory analysis. For periodic 'spot' measurements and low flow groundwater sampling consider the YSI ProQuatro and ProDSS instruments. For longer term deployments offering continuous monitoring consider the YSI EXO multiparameter sondes with the option of remote data to your mobile device or PC using our telemetry range.
Common field parameters for low-flow groundwater sampling include;
pH
Conductivity (derived; specific conductance, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), resistivity)
Dissolved oxygen
Oxygen redox potential (ORP)
Temperature
Turbidity (derived; total suspended solids)
Others - ammonium, ammonia, nitrate, chloride
Groundwater Level Monitoring
Assessment of groundwater level is key for all hydrogeological studies. Our range includes solutions for manual water level measurements, continuous logging and remote data;
Borehole and piezometer installations
Installation and materials
To compliment our groundwater range, Flux Enviro offer installation materials including narrow diameter well screen, bentonite and well caps. Furthermore, our team offer comprehensive piezometer installation services for shallow installations using handheld window sampling and sacrificial cone methods. For large scale projects, larger diameter well screen or drilling works please reach out and we'll refer you to our recommended providers.
Conductivity Monitoring
Conductivity provides a useful and often underutilised indicator of changes in groundwater chemistry and flow. For example groundwater conductivity profiles with a borehole serve to inform groundwater ingress, flow rates and well construction. Similarly, in-situ conductivity measurement may be used to determine groundwater flow rate, hydraulic conductivity, resistivity via dilution or tracer tests.
We can provide equipment for:
Pumping Tests & Aquifer Investigations
Monitor groundwater response during pumping, abstraction and aquifer investigations.
Equipment can include:
Remote Monitoring
Assessing groundwater parameters via a single or periodic sampling campaign offers useful insight however to truly understand seasonal, climatic, operational or other relationships continuous datasets are necessary. Combining our extensive range of sensors with telemetry instrumentation offers groundwater data from the field directly to your mobile device offering;
Enhanced data availability
Improved data acquisition
Automated alarms and notifications
Multiparameter and multi location sensor networks
Substantially reduced operational expenditure
See our 'Quarry and Mining' page for further information on remote data systems. Same solutions and approach can of course be applied to other groundwater and hydrogeological monitoring applications.
