Gouge Augers

Gouge augers are lightweight manual soil sampling tools designed for the rapid collection of shallow, relatively undisturbed soil samples. Ideal for environmental, agricultural and geotechnical investigations, they enable accurate profiling of soil horizons with minimal disturbance to the surrounding ground.

Suitable for use in soft to medium soils, gouge augers are also commonly used for the installation of narrow-diameter piezometers for groundwater and ground gas monitoring.

Available Options

Gouge augers are available in:

• 30 mm diameter × 1 m length

• 60 mm diameter × 1 m length

Standard models are supplied with a Hex Quick Pin connection, with threaded connections available on request.

For increased sampling depths, extension rods are available in 0.5 m and 1 m lengths and are used in conjunction with the standard rubber-coated auger handle.

For firmer ground conditions, a slide hammer can be added to provide percussive driving.

Operation

Gouge augers are typically used to collect soil samples to depths of approximately 2–3 metres or greater, depending on ground conditions. The auger is attached to extension rods and manually pushed into the ground using the auger handle. In medium to firm soils, a slide hammer can be fitted to drive the auger to the required depth.
